About AIS LTD: 30+ Years of Excellence

Dr Mike Bertenshaw and Dr Dai Darkin founded AIS Ltd in 1991 and grew the business successfully over the years, with Michelle and Scott Idiens coming on board in 2014 and 2017 respectively. In 2019, the business was sold to Michelle and Scott to allow AIS Ltd to continue to grow with a new generation of talented, driven people, forming a young, dynamic team for the years to come.

Our goal under the new ownership is to grow and continue to diversify our client base, as well as invest in future software products/technologies. The majority of AIS staff are from laboratory-based backgrounds, with Michelle and Scott having 30 years of lab experience between them, so AIS Ltd as a whole is very well positioned to offer comprehensive LIMS solutions for many industry areas across the UK and Ireland.

As of 24th June 2021, AIS Ltd has become ISO9001 and ISO27001 certified.

Michelle Idiens

Managing Director


Michelle has over 13 years experience working and managing in Environmental and Water Testing Laboratories and has been with AIS since 2014, becoming co-owner along with her partner Scott in November 2019. Michelle oversees Operations and New Product Development.

James Beard

Development Manager


Jim has worked for AIS for over 25 years as a Software Developer, with promotion to Senior Software Engineer in 2016 and has been integral in the development of the current system during this time. He heads up our Development team, continuing to improve the functionality of our LIMS product.

Operations Manager


Stuart has over 10 years experience working in Environmental Testing Laboratories and has been with AIS since 2018, becoming Operations Manager in November 2019. Stuart manages the Support team and New System Demonstrations, Sales and Installations.

Emily Kepner

Software Engineer


Before joining AIS in 2023 as a Software Engineer, Emily worked in data analysis, systems admin, and delivering large-scale IT projects in both the public and private sectors. This included technical experience in a laboratory environment, particularly in improving laboratory workflows and procedures through both code and low-code solutions.

Michael Sophocli

Senior LIMS Specialist


With over 8 years of experience in NHS Clinical Virology and Microbiology laboratories, Michael brings strong expertise in laboratory systems, workflows, and operational improvement. He played a key role in the adoption of automation and successfully delivered two LIMS migrations, thereby enhancing efficiency and improving workflows.
Since joining AIS in January 2018 as a LIMS Specialist, Michael has progressed to Deputy Operations / Sales Manager in 2025. In this role, he plays a pivotal part in customer support, sales, and leads the implementation of new system projects, helping organisations get the most from their LIMS solutions.

Through the successful implementation of our laboratory information management system software, the use of customised training material and specialised technical support services, we ensure a seamless transition from your previous setup to the new LIMS software. Our LIMS solutions are easy to operate, use and maintain. They can be integrated with third-party software and instruments and allow the inexperienced user to enter data into the system quickly and accurately thus limiting the opportunity for errors and mistakes. AIS LIMS includes a 'report' designer which allows the user to set up a report style and layout dependent upon the purpose of the report.
